Our resident photography genius, Rob, recently launched his new website: panodrop.com, showcasing his talent for Stereographic photography. By the end of the first day it had received over 6,000 hits and the logo masking was the hottest web design topic on Reddit. So with all the interest, we thought we’d share, roughly, how we did it.

We started with the basic mask, a cut out of the logo placed on top of an image of pure white using CSS. Together these created the part of logo that changes.

That was our default view. Then we inserted a hidden div between the mask and the white background, which would act as a placeholder for the dynamic background.

Then, using Javascript, all we had to do was to change the background of the hidden div to whatever the user was hovering over and change the background position to follow the cursor.

One issue we came across was when hovering near the corners of images, the corners were visible in the logo. Not nice!

To fix this we used a bit of maths in the Javascript to implement a “safe-zone” on the image.

Simple as that! We’re really pleased with it and Rob is pleased with the conversation it’s sparked online. Hopefully it will help him sell some prints…

Spent the past week in the Sahara desert, filming one of the hardest races on the planet. Runners have to run/walk/crawl 250km across some of the harshest terrain around. My job was to film and produce a edit each day. No easy task when you throw desert heat and sand storms into the mix. I also took the opportunity to get some rather interesting photos.. Click below to see more.

This video was picked as video of the day on the GoPro Facebook page. Receiving over 26,000 views. Music produced by a friend of mine.

This is my favourite video of the trip. Not focused on the runners but more about the organisation behind the event. Every day 1000 people pack up and move across the desert. It’s quite amazing really.

Helicopter ride around the camp and dunes. The black tents are for the runners and the white were for organisation and press.

Early on a Friday morning the boys were warming up their keypad fingers by shooting foam pellets from barrelled nerf guns. Now with speedy fingers on the go the work is pouring out!

Poor Natalie was a willing target eager to show that she was no wimp to foam pellets and took it in her stride. (Luckily she was far enough away at the other side of the studio and only got hit once.) In retaliation she’s going to choose which one of them has to make th next round of tea!

Here’s a little video captured on a GoPro. Shooting down through the park. I wish there was an easier way to get back to the top. Walking up that hill wasn’t easy in full snowboard gear.

I also popped into town on Saturday night to see how people were coping and to get a few pictures. It was all rather funny. Girls out in high heels and skirts.. ridiculous.

Police car crossing the junction after struggling to get up the hill.

I love the snow, I wouldn’t mind more. Next challenge would be to try and snowboard through town.

We sent a couple of our senior creatives north of the border this week, not to celebrate Rabbie Burns night but to get cracking on an exciting new digital project with leading Welfare to Work provider Working Links Scotland. Not only will the project see us collaborating with academics, research agencies, artists and production crews the campaign is going to be launched in a political arena to raise the issue of youth unemployment.
We’re really proud to be part of to this influential project from both a creative and digital perspective that could hopefully make a real difference to the lives of Scotland’s young people.

Wikipedia has started a 24hr blackout in protest against US anti-piracy laws that it claims could "fatally damage the free and open internet" and "severely limit people’s access to online information". The English version of the site has closed access to the online encyclopaedia to highlight its opposition to the proposed SOPA and PIPA laws that are being voted on in Washington later this month.

Wikipedia joins an impressive list of sites such as Google and Flickr all preparing to join up for a day of darkness to show their opposition for the controversial proposals. Critics are suggesting that SOPA would impact on any site that included links, making them pretty much defunct and liable to government shut down.

So what if the laws do go ahead? What will it mean for us all and is it really worth all the hoo ha? SOPA is proposed as a way to make it easier for intellectual property owners to take down requests or stop payments to websites that infringe copyright laws such as hosting films, streaming music or selling fake goods – so far, so good. But critics claim that the laws will give too much power to content owners and allow them to demand ‘allegedly’ offending sites are are taken down or links removed, adverts withdrawn and payment services like PayPal stopped within five days of a complaint. What’s more, the act grants significant powers to the U.S Government, which has caused opponents to be concerned about censorship and withdrawal of material it deems inappropriate.

Whilst it’s clear that piracy and misuse of content is costing us all dear, the implications that SOPA could actually encourage more rogue marketing and restrict the sharing of information has worrying consequences and may impact on the way we all use and interact online – is this a solution we are willing to accept or should we all stand with Wikipedia and Google against the legislation?

The beginning of 2011 I decided to embark on a ‘little’ project. I wanted to see if I could take one photo every single day for an entire year. I was going to try and develop my own online system to help me achieve this, but after a bit of research I discovered Shuttercal. This site allows you to upload your daily photos to an online calendar. There is also a nice community of people who are also doing the project. The best part of this service is the ability to order prints of each completed month. It’s really nice to have a physical record of the year.

I’ll be writing a more in-depth post about the experience once Decembers photos arrive.

I was up in the mountains again last week. It was my job to document the trip. I got chance to try out the new GoPro 2. The weather wasn’t nearly as nice as last year, we had one day of sunshine and the rest was a white out. Because there was so much powder we got chance to make our own little street park type thing. The image above is a group shot with the camera set up on a tripod with a 13 second exposure. I lit them using a new 160 LED camera light I had purchased for the trip. I asked them not to move because of the long exposure time. Unfortunately as I fired the fireworks around them, some flinched..

During the day we hit the same spot, we spent a few hours building an enormous run in, down the hill behind the hotel on the left, just so we would have enough speed to launch off this roof. Because there was so much powder the landing was nice and soft.

Three days of snowfall..

Along with the photos, I captured about 50Gb of footage, that I need to put into some sort of comprehensible edit.

Ill let you know how it goes..

What do you do with a blank wall? This is certainly one idea. A formation of shapes has been cleverly crafted to spell out a message underneath it, using lighting and shadows. How the artist managed to create a shape for each letter is a mystery to me. It must have taken a lot of patience, trial and error. It would be great to see this for real to fully appreciate it. You’d have to mind your wooly cardi on the spiky bits through.

When the founder of Redstone Press discovered a sign hooked on his sons bedroom door that read ‘I’m fine, just get on with your own life’, he was inspired to design his own cheeky doorknob cards. One was ‘Keys? Phone? Sense of Humour’ and another ‘Cleaning in Progress’.

It then went on to be published and named ‘The Household Box’ which includes a household manual, notes to self, daily aphorisms, doorknob cards and warnings to visitors stating comments such as ‘Irritable’.

The pack has been designed to make home life more enjoyable, interesting and, at times, dramatic, involving the whole family and allowing their individual personalities to shine.

A close friend of mine got married on Saturday and as part of Indian tradition I was asked to take part in having Mehndi two days before the wedding day. The Mehndi was done on both my hands, front and back. The Mehndi artists talents were amazing as you can’t just rub it off and start again, it was all created totally freehand. Once the design was created I had to wait for it to dry and over 24 hours it would dry darker.

The red cotton (Mouli or Kalawa) on my right wrist is to get a blessing from god and a sign of people part of an Indian wedding. The day was amazing, and the Mehndi is still on!

For twenty years, Nottingham’s very own fashion designer Sir Paul Smith has been receiving an assortment of unusual mystery postal deliveries from a secret gift-giver.

The gifts, described as “inspirational” by the designer, have ranged from a mannequin’s torso, a galleon-shaped bird box, a traffic cone and a watering can. All have all arrived without packaging or a message from the sender simply arriving with elaborate stamps and an address label stuck to them.

Documenting the objects is Nottingham filmmaker Ben Wigley who has made a film about the fascinating story currently showing in a Paul Smith themed auditorium at Broadway cinema which features footage of the fashion designer taking the viewer through the objects and describing the gifts as significant inspirations in his design process.

In the film, Smith goes on to say “What’s amazing is it’s a completely unsung hero. It’s someone doing something massively creative but no-one knows about it.”

Been experimenting with some stereographic projections. I came across a plugin for After Effects that allows you to manipulate the projection coordinates. The result is rather interesting to say the least..

Nottingham was once a pretty popular spot for street skating. That was until the late ‘90s when there was a crack down. Many of the popular spots, Market Square and the Boardmarsh Banks for example, have now gone. Ever since Nottingham has been in need of decent sized, well thought out spot for youth to hang out and practice the sport.

In March work began on the new Clifton skatepark. The company in charge of the project was Maverick Industries. They’re renowned for building very high quality concrete parks. Overall its taken around five months to complete the project.

Last weekend I went to check it out with a couple of friends…

Click the link below to see some more shots..

Here’s Alex pulling off a huge Rock Fakie on a section of the bowl.

Below is a sequence shot and still of him Kick Flipping the gap.

Conclusion: the park is amazing. Very well thought out, lots of space and the quality is top notch. If you skate or know of some one who does I highly recommend you take a little trip down there. Post code is NG118JU

Paperlux™ uses a special concentration of light that only removes the top layer of the paper, calculating exactly the depth of the paper and successfully creating a filigree relief formation of your chosen design.
